July 29/2008 July has been a busy month in the Zone, there was Our Fun Fly on the 12th, Rainy River International's Fun Fly on the 19th, and Thunder Bay's Lakehead Aero Modelers Fun Fly on the 26th. As President of the club, I felt I should try to attend all these events as ambassador to our club (At least that's what I told my wife, ha ha :) So I have been putting the miles on and hauling planes all over North Western Ontario. I have a few Pic's from and a short report from each event if anyone want to have a look. click here for Rainy River, and here for T Bay. The Bonny Bay Float fly is coming up fast and we have got the local Radio Stations plugging the float fly for us. Thanks to the gang at CKDR, Q104 fm and CBC radio. Remember the deadline for pilot registration is Aug 3rd. Jerome has pilot registration forms and you can get one from me if you would like by just e mailing me at bbrisson@drytel.net
July 16 2008 The Patricia Region Aero Modelers Fun Fly 2008 was held July 12-13, and I am glad to report there was a great turnout! There were pilots from Thunder Bay, Kenora, Souix Lookout and Ear Falls! That was the good news, the bad news was the weather! it was cold, raining, windy and generally the worst weather possible for flying. There were a few folks flying though, and there were a few thrills. Harry and Jerome went up for a flight with their combat planes and were tearing up the sky when they had a head on mid air! the best part was the reaction of the pilots, most would be upset or angry but Harry and Jerome were yelling "woohoo's" and exchanging "high fives"! The weather didn't get any better on Sunday, but there were still a few flights. Mike from Souix Lookout brought a .51 powered control line model and gave us a demo. I remember control line planes with .049's and 12 inch wings....boy things have changed! Mike gave the few folks that braved the weather a real show of what these planes can really do! We would really like to thank the folks who made the trip to our fun fly, even though the weather was so bad. and a big thanks to all the club members for their help. next year we are going to order better weather in advance! Looking ahead, the Rainy River Fun Fly is going on July 19-20, and the Thunder Bay Fun Fly is July 26-27. I hope they get better weather than we did! July 6/08 We had a little get together on Saturday and even though the wind was a bit to strong to fly and scale planes, the combat planes were up and trailing ribbons in a fur ball. Harry, Jerome and Bill were all up trying to cut ribbons, with some having better luck than others. Harry won the day with 3 cuts (Bill's twice and Jerome once) and Jerome got a cut too. Bill's luck was not as good (see pic) but he brought 2 combat planes so he could at least fly and fight in the 3rd battle. Jerome tied on the apron and did a great job (as always) as the cook. Burgers were had by all. Ron Hersey brought out a pair of Beavers, one on wheels and one on amphibs, (his design) but, unfortunately, the wind was enough to keep them on the ground. Ralph was there with a plane and brought young River Hall out with his new plane. River was also grounded by the wind, opting to keep his plane in one piece for the fun fly coming up next weekend. Next weekend is our "Summer Fun Fly" at the field, so cross your fingers for good weather! the BBQ is ready, the runways are in great shape and everyone is welcome! there is no pilot registration fees or landing fees, and spectators are invited to come out and see the planes. Don't forget, The Bonny Bay Float Fly is coming up fast, get your float planes charged up and ready to fly!. Hope to see you all there! June 2 2008 It's been a wile but here are some updates. Flying season is going full blast, and the field is in great shape! We have had a few new faces out there and a few "first flights" for both planes and pilots! The BBQ is also getting a workout! Wednesday night flying nights have also become "BBQ Night" and so far all we've had is hot dogs and smokies, but burgers and steaks can't be far off! The Rabbit Lk Float Fly was on June 7-8 and the turn out was good, but the weather was not. Saturday was greeted with heavy winds and big waves, making all but the bravest pilots stay on the ground. Jerome was brave enough to give flying a try, but it was a short flight, and left him with a wet airplane (but not a broken one!) Sunday's weather was a bit nicer, and I hope to get some photo's from Peter Schaffer. We have been taking a few pic's out there (when I remember my camera) so check out the Photo Gallery page for new pic's. April 21/08 Well I guess it's official...our Flying Field is operational! Bill, Terry and Harry were out on Saturday the 19th and Harry, Jerome and Bill were flying again on Sunday. Ron came out to visit, but didn't bring ant hardware to fly. There was even a bit of a Combat on, 3 coro planes in a fur ball (My first time) WHAT A HOOT! that combat thing is FUN! The field is still a bit damp, but otherwise in good shape, everything seemed to weather the winter well, and other than boots being the preferred footwear, we are all set for another season of fun. Remember all, Wed. is Flying night...come on out, even if it's just to watch, sometimes its that little bit that gets you back into the swing of things. Jim has donated a BBQ to the club, and we will have that set up soon, so add another thing to your checklist before heading to the field...burgers and hot dogs! I noticed there were a few folks driving by the field had stopped out on the road to watch, and I think a sign at the start of the road in welcoming visitors may get a few new people out to the field and who knows, maybe some new members. Mar 17/08 We had our March Meeting on the 12th, and got a few things settled. We have set the date for our Bonny Bay Float Fly, it will be held on Aug 9-10 at the Bonny Bay Camp. (More info). Jerome Bobay suggested we acquire a BBQ for the flying field, and we all thought that was a great idea, and one of our new members told us he had one he would donate to the club! A big Thank You goes out to Jim Melanson and his wife Sandra for the donation! that will be a great addition to our little airport! We also discussed an event to go along with Dryden's "Moose Fest". We plan to hold a small "Air Show" and combat display. the Moose Fest event falls 1 week before our summer Fun Fly, so rather than try to reorganize the fun fly, we opted to do a smaller show and use the opportunity to invite folks out the next week to see the fun fly. Mar 12/08 Well it's meeting night, and I am getting together some stuff for the gang to think about, we will be setting the date for our float fly, and discussing the plans for our "Moosefest Air Show, and Combat day" I also hope to get some more pic's for the web site and maybe even some construction pic's for the "Special Projects" page. Feb 21/08 Well our last meeting was a bit of a bust, but there were a few now faces there and we got to introduce them to the hobby and Ralph had some great kits and ARF's to show them. We have yet to set the date for the Float Fly, but we will have that nailed down as soon as we can. Hopefully the cold weather we have been having will soon be behind us, and we can get out and fly a little on ski's again soon.
I have been in contact with folks from the other local clubs and would like to thank all of them for the help setting up this site and helping coordinate dates for events to keep the conflicts to a minimum. As always there are lots of things going on that don't find there way to the news page, so if there's stuff on the go that I haven't got listed here, feel free to let me know. email me at bbrisson@drytel.net and I will be sure to get it posted here.
