Thunder Bay Lakehead Aero Modelers Fun Fly 2008

This years Lakehead Aero Modelers Fun Fly was held July 26th and 27th at their field just south of Thunder Bay on Hwy 61. There seemed to be a good turn out, and the weather was great, a little windy, but great. This was the first time I made the trip to  Thunder Bay for a fun fly and the club there made me feel right at home. I was amused to find that the take-offs from their field were free, but the landings cost $5.00. I am glad that was for the weekend and not each landing! (It was windy...and I made six or seven landings for each take off).

The Lakehead Modelers have a great flying field, with a large open area, but the left approach is a bit cluttered with some small trees. The wind was from that direction, so it was only a slight inconvenience on take off. Landing was not a big deal as the approach from the left was wide open and the wind was strait down the runway. The radio impound shack was well organized and there was a booth for burgers and snacks.

There was even a combat mission flown, I had asked if it would be all right if Damon and I flew against each other as a bit of a demo, and the guys there thought that would be a great idea and offered to join us in a game of cut the ribbon! I was a little concerned that I might get someone angry with me if I happened to collide with their foam winged combat plane, but I was assured that there would be no hard feelings, and that's "part of combat". After we had a pilot briefing, and all got fuelled up, we took to the sky and the fight was on. I managed to get a "Kill" and Damon had a spectacular mid air collision with one of the foam combat planes flown by "Nick".  Damon actually managed to regain control and land his Coro combat plane with only one rubber band securing the wing! The Foam wing thing was destroyed! Coro 1 Foam 0!  Damon had his plane repaired and flying for the next day!

Here are a few pic's of the event...

      See you in 2009!
